Tree Trimming & Pruning

Keep your trees properly trimmed, pruned, and looking their best. As an ISA Certified Arborist, Jacob takes tree care seriously to preserve the health and appearance of the tree.

Why hire an ISA Certified Arborist as your tree care provider?

Per the ISA: “An arborist by definition is an individual who is trained in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining individual trees. ISA arborist certification is a nongovernmental, voluntary process by which individuals can document their base of knowledge. Certified Arborists are individuals who have achieved a level of knowledge in the art and science of tree care through experience and by passing a comprehensive examination developed by some of the nation’s leading experts on tree care.

Arborists specialize in the care of individual trees. They are knowledgeable about the needs of trees, and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.”

Unlike other trades, Florida does not require licensing for tree companies other than a basic occupational license. Hiring an ISA Certified Arborist is your way to know that the person taking care of your trees has adequate experience and knowledge to do so. We are also committed to continuing education and held to national safety and ethics standards. Be aware that “ISA Certified Arborist” is the legally protected term. Beware of companies advertising as “certified arborist” or just “certified”.

Tree Trimming vs. Pruning

These words are often used interchangeably but they do have different definitions. Pruning is when we are removing dead, dying, diseased, or loose branches. Pruning is done for the sake of the tree’s health. Trimming is done for aesthetic reasons. When you want your tree to look a certain way, or be a certain distance from a structure, I trim it.

What these have in common is that done incorrectly, both can permanently damage the health and look of your tree. Here are some common mistakes that inexperienced practitioners make:

  • Flush Cuts: Each branch has a “branch protection zone”. This area has unique biology that helps protect the trunk of the tree from decay. If the cut is made too close to the trunk the BPZ will not be able to keep the decay out.
  • Topping: Topping is when a tree’s branches are cut down in order to reduce the height of a tree to a predetermined height. This creates a myriad of problems and is universally frowned upon in arboriculture. The new growth after topping will have structural defects and need near constant maintenance. Any tree care practitioner should know better than to top your tree unless there is a specific circumstance where required. There IS a way to reduce a tree’s height correctly by making proper reduction cuts back to the biologically correct zone.
  • Oversized Cuts: Each species of tree has their own rate at which they are able to “heal” a wound. If you make a cut too large, the tree will never be able to “heal” that wound fast enough to keep decay out. If it is necessary for a large limb to be removed, careful attention should be given to the overall conditions of the tree and soil to give the tree the best chance of survival.
  • Trimming Too Much: This is possibly the most common mistake I see, especially with oaks and palms. Your tree NEEDS LEAVES FOR FOOD. If too much is cut at one time it will be put into a state of stress and decline.
